When a charged particle moves in a magnetic field, it emits radiation, and that's where the radio signals come from. Ute Kraus, Physics education group Kraus, Universität Hildesheim background: Axel Mellingerīecause the regions around black holes are accelerated to such great speeds, the matter within them - made up of charged particles - generates strong magnetic fields. The size of the event horizon (white) and the size of the region devoid of light (black) have the ratios they do predicted by the General theory of Relativity and the mass of the black hole itself. The Event Horizon Telescope just came out with, earlier today (April 10, 2019), their first image of what any black hole's event horizon looks like. The black hole at the center of our Milky Way, simulated here, is the largest one seen from Earth's. The Event Horizon Telescope had an enormous challenge to overcome in order to get an image of any black hole at all, owing to the tininess of its angular size. We need both of those in order to reconstruct any the details of any astronomical object, including a black hole.
